YOU HAD SURGERY. ARE YOU READY TO RETURN TO YOUR ACTIVITY of CHOICE?

Most post op rehab programs are NOT enough to return to sport.

Most people spend 1-3 months at PT after an orthopedic surgery and then are discharged.  The exercises you are doing at 2 months post op knee surgery are not enough to get your ready to return to….hiking, skiing, running, climbing, etc.  The system is just not set up for this.

Let’s meet ‘Jenn’. She had a meniscus surgery and attended PT for 6-8 weeks before being discharged. She was given a list of exercises to keep doing at home. She can walk around, do stairs (pretty well) and is back to work. Jenn loves to run and hike in the White Mtns. If Jenn did her exercises diligently she would still not be prepared to return to her passion because of the high stress it places on the body. (I see ‘Jenn’s’ all the time, often after they get injured again)

From what I see as a PT and friend to many post op patients, people return to activities ill prepared. I feel there should be a second round of PT after the initial discharge, timeline varies, to continue progression and increase load on the surgical area appropriately for the sport/activity/work desired. This reduces the chance of re-injury or new injury because of weakness.

The tissues that are healing from the surgery continue to heal and tolerate more load as time goes by. So if you want to return to an activity that stresses your surgical area you need to keep working and matching the load tolerance.

I have found that my business model is perfect for this. We can progress and meet as needed over longer periods of time. I pull from my own personal activity experience to understand the stresses placed on the body from different sports/activities. AND I do work with patients during the first round of rehab and then move into the ‘2nd’ round when appropriate.

Recovering from surgery takes a physical and emotional toll - I love being able to help others return to movement, health and joy!

Reach out with questions if this feels like I am talking about you :)
